Active Surface Models for Brain Imaging

This paper presents a generic approach for surface modelling of 3D objects from volume data. Our strategy is to shape a closed surface of connected triangles to match the edge of the object. The adaptive strategy we suggest invokes minimisation of an energy function containing a set of individually weighted terms reeecting a set of desired goals. From the closed surface of triangles we are able to do eecient 3D visualisation as well as perform quantitative measurements within the object. The framework is very general and applicable in many research areas, and we show the viability of the approach in the context of medical imaging.
